Chairs

In ancient China, chairs and armchairs were a symbol of education, status, privilege and authority. High officials and religious dignitaries used low platforms as honorific seats during ceremonial and sacrificial rites. With the eastward migration of Buddhism from India, chairs and armchairs began to appear with more frequency as the status enhancing seats of great masters, along with the custom of disciples gathered around seated upon stools.
